Dr. Hawa Travels to Sierra Leone To Perform Laparoscopic Surgery

Did you know that Capital Women’s Care Ashburn’s very own Dr. Hawa is the only AAGL Fellow in Loudoun County?

He pursued a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery at the George Washington University Hospital in 2011, and in 2017 he traveled to Sierra Leone with the volunteer-based, non-profit organization Saving Lives Initiative to lend his surgical talents.

Together with his medical team, Dr. Hawa performed the first laparoscopic surgery ever in Sierra Leone!

Laparoscopic surgery Is sometimes referred to as minimally invasive surgery, which is Dr. Hawa’s specialty. It is a surgical procedure that is done with the assistance of a small video camera and several very thin instruments.

Using these tools, the surgeon (Dr. Hawa, in this case) is able to see inside the patient without making a large incision. Not only does this type of procedure leave the patient with much, much smaller scars, it also provides them with quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and earlier return to normal activities. In fact, most of Dr. Hawa’s patients are back to their regular daily activities within two weeks max!

Check out some photos from Dr. Hawa’s trip below, and if you’re interested in learning more about laparoscopic surgery, make an appointment and you can talk with Dr. Hawa yourself!
